Interview with Carol Stangler
The Craft and Art of Bamboo
How and when did you begin working with bamboo?
I happened upon my first bamboo grove in 1988 in rural Georgia, while searching for vines to make baskets. The bamboo was so exotic and intriguing, I just fell in love with it. But at the time, it didn’t seem useful to my craft because it was huge, and it didn’t bend. Two years later, however, I worked with it intensely as it became the perfect material for the frame of the 12 foot diameter “Earthball,” which I’ve written about in my book. From then on, I made it my business to explore bamboo as a new material for Western artists.
Describe one of your most rewarding experiences working with bamboo.
Actually, I’d say that putting together The Craft and Art of Bamboo was incredibly rewarding. I had a year to focus on bamboo and connect with some of the most talented and knowledgeable people in the field. I designed and created many of the projects for the book at that time, which was fun. Doing the book was a lot of pressure, but it opened me up to the wide world of bamboo.
